Live | Glenn Hughes – Cultuurpodium Boerderij – Zoetermeer [NL]
15 May 2024
Damn vital and still hits all the notes!
Glenn Hughes is now touring in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Deep Purple album ‘Burn’. This was the first album on which he and David Coverdale sang. After this one they recorded ‘Stormbringer’ and ‘Come taste the Band’.
The setlist contains largely songs from the ‘Burn’ album, supplemented with other songs from his Deep Purple era.
GLENN HUGHES – THE SHOW
On a rainy Wednesday evening, the Boerderij is sold out and it seems everybody wants to see Glenn Hughes and his band again in this wonderful venue. The musical gang consists of Soren Andersen (guitar), Ash Sheehan (drums) and Bob Fridzema (keyboards). Actually it has been already eight years since Glenn, with Soren Anderson on guitar, played a Deep Purple set at our favourite venue in The Netherlands.
The show opens with ,,Stormbringer’’ and after that you can’t do much wrong. ,,Might just take your Life’’ and ,,Sail Away’’ are played next. You would think that with eight songs on the setlist we can go home quickly, but nothing could be further from the truth. ,,You fool no One’’ contains guitar solos, parts of ,,Lazy’’/,,Blues’’/,,High ball Shooter’’ and a very long drum solo by the hard hitter and cheerful personality Ash Sheehan.
This also looks like a moment when the 73-year-old Glenn takes a break and enjoys his band.
THE MAN WHO COMBINES HARD ROCK, SOUL AND A TOUCH OF FUNK
After this keyboard player Bob Fridzema is announced as the man who studied successfully Jon Lord. You can put that in your pocket and it is no lie. Besides that, he fills everything and more up if there is a gap. Together with Soren this guy does also a lot of back-up vocals.
In ,,Mistreated’’, ,,Getting’ Tighter’’ and ,,You keep on Moving’’, Glenn shows once again that he is still the man who can combine hard rock, soul and a touch of funk. Even though the years seem to be counting down.
It was already known that after this tour Glenn will quit playing Deep Purple for a while to play (also in Europe) with Black Country Communion. This is definitely something to look forward to as well.
THE ENCORE
But first the encore, the one we all waiting for, which is ,,Burn’’.
And now the show is finished. The hall is empty. And finally, it stopped raining when I walk to my car, thinking: What a great night!
