Live | Opeth – 013-Tilburg [NL]

7 August 2024

Opeth, one of the most innovative prog metal bands from Sweden, will release their 14th studio album called ‘The Last Will And Testament’ on October 11th. It is a concept album, and the story is set in the post – World War 1 era. The first single, ,,§1’’, has just been released. However, tonight’s setlist does, sad but true, not contain a new song. Instead we are treated to good old classic Opeth tracks from their previous albums. Which is of course also a treat as Opeth shows are always worthwhile visiting.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

The 013 venue is packed (completely sold-out in fact) with a highly anticipating crowd. Right from the start Mikael Åkerfeldt & Co. deliver the goods as usual. ,,The Grand Conjuration”, from Opeth’s classic album ‘Ghost Reveries’, opens the set and Åkerfeldt’s throat is again second to none. Although I am still not a fan of his growling and grunting. Follow up ,,Demon Of The Fall” from ‘My Arms, Your Hearse’ is also a well-known track which this audience has heard several times before. But it still rocks like hell. The absolute highlights of this spectacular evening, as Opeth always puts on a tremendous show, were the long, epic, doomy ,,The Drapery Falls”, from my favourite Opeth album ‘Blackwater Park’ and an impressive version of ,,Face Of Melinda”, in which all musical aspects of Opeth can be heard and marvelled at.

NO SURPRISES

The set did not have any surprises as we were again treated to other classic Opeth songs like: ,,Heir Apparent”, ,,Ghost Of Perdition” – an absolute dark metal gem for some of the audience – and the title track of Opeth’s 12th studio album ‘Sorceress’. The encore was, no surprise here again, ,,Deliverance”, their classic track recorded in 2002. Overall, a great gig, but I would like to have heard a couple of new tracks. Or some other songs from their previous albums, as the setlist is rather too predictable. That being said, Opeth is still one of the best power/prog metal bands on this planet.
