Former Nightwish singer Anette Olzon teams up with Finnish master Jani Liimatainen (Sonata Arctica/Cain’s Offering) in this new band/project The Dark Element. Helping out are bassist Jonas Kuhlberg and drummer Jani Hurula (both also Cain’s Offering). If you are a bit familiar with Cain’s Offering and the music of Nightwish in the time that Anette recorded three albums with them you can almost picture the music The Dark Element is bringing. A combination of atmospheric rock, progressive/symphonic rock with (indeed) some dark gothic elements in the music. Anette is of course an excellent singer who could have participated in Exit Eden with her powerful yet angelic voice. For a song writer like Liimatainen working with this lady must have been something that came as a natural thing. With her voice in mind the Finnish composer/guitarist/keyboardist has created a bunch of songs that should appeal to an audience that has groups like Within Temptation, Nightwish and Evanescence among their favourites. Adding a bit of bombast and some programming to the mix ‘The Dark Element’ has become a record that has all the elements modern rock music needs these days. It sounds heavy yet clean, loud yet accessible, at times fast and furious yet always melodic. Listen to the beautiful ballad ,,Someone Like You’’ (obviously a very personal topic for Anetta Olzon judging by the lyrics), ,,Halo’’ (great chorus and keyboard melody) and the fast rocking ,,The Ghost And The Reaper’’ as some examples of what The Dark Element stands for. Solid, strong, versatile, full of variation and ultramodern with an outstanding technical production sounds that have infiltrated the music. Very much recommended!
